From Ben Kristy, Aviation Curator, National Museum of the Marine Corps January 8th 2013. The DH-4 is depicting a DH-4B serving with Marine Observation Squadron 1 in Ocatal, Nicaragua. The "102" that is on the side of the aircraft is in fact not the ship number but an example of the standard USN/USMC squadron markings for the period. The "1" denotes the squadron number (i.e. VMO-1, VMF-3, etc.), the "O" (with the slash character in the middle) denotes Observation, and the "2" is the ship number. This aircraft is a replica as well, built from plans and utilizing a limited number of original DH-4 bits and pieces. |
