N240R was piloted by Steve Fossett, world adventurer and holder of 115 various world endurance and distance records, who alone went missing on 3 September 2007 from a flight departing Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch Strip near Yerington, Nevada. The Preliminary NTSB Accident Report on N240R, despite no finding of the aircraft wreckage, declared one fatality.

No flight plan was filed by Fossett. No ELT signal was received. The Civil Air Patrol with airborne optical, thermal and specialized computer resources and military aircraft with night search capability did not find N240R in extensive searches covering 30,000 square nautical miles; some areas were searched multiple times. Fossett's wife has started the petition process to have him legally declared dead.

N240R, as reported in the news for the past few days, has been found, sadly, crashed in the mountains in Madera County, California.
