In 1967 this glider landed on a dry lake bed with the nose skid down for a few hundred feet, which set fire to skin fabric that had been faired down to the skid on this very early (s/n 2) model. On rebuild of this one, and subsequent models, an air gap was left between the skid and the fuselage to prevent recurrence. The aircraft is pictured in flight with sister N2434W in the 1969 edition of Conway's "The Joy of Soaring". This aircraft was based for a time at the University of Illinois - Champaign Urbana where I flew my first solo in it on October 17, 1974. |
