My father and I are the builders of this aircraft - Canadian registration C-GRZF. We started it in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1975 and completed the airframe up to the firewall including covering and painting. The wings are assembled from a Sparcraft Symmetrical Wing kit. Canopy, Pants and Nosebowl purchased from Pitts. The rest of the airframe was "built from scratch" - ie. raw materials. Vision problems grounded me, so in 1981, the aircraft was sold to Bob and Tim Schuh of Calgary, Alberta. The engine installation and final assembly were done by Peter Wilhelm of Guelph, Ontario and the first flight was the afternoon of March 16, 1983 by Tim Schuh. It has been flown by Canadian Aerobatic Champions Al Hauff and Wayne Quistburg, both of Guelph, Ontario. Tim had a minor accident with it, hitting a gopher hole while taxiing on a grass strip at their farm in Saskatchewan. The aircraft ended up inverted and it bent the spinner and top of the vertical fin and the aircraft was "out of commission" for over a year as it sat waiting "for the mechanic to get around to fixing it". After having it about 18 years and apparently flying a couple of shows in it, Tim sold it to Roy Calhoun of Calgary, Alberta - only about 85hrs TTAF! A couple of years back, it was sold to the present owner whom I've tried to contact but received no reply. I would appreciate it if anyone who may have a photo of it in its present scheme e-mail me a copy.

The aircraft is not an S1-C as registered, but an S1-D fuselage built from the 1974 plans and Sparcraft's symmetrical wing (ply ribs instead of built-up used instead of the modified M-6 airfoil in the plans). I don't know why it was registered as a "C" model. Forgot my e-mail in previous comments. Anyone who may have a photo of it with its new registration, I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail me a copy at arcon@bmts.com.

Someone e-mailed me several recent photos of the plane in its new colour scheme. It looks fantastic. Unfortunately, I somehow lost the e-mail letter before viewing the photos - all I have as to who sent them is what was written below some photos "Hiroko 79 Such Light Entertainment". Whomever sent them to me, thank you. It is much appreciated. |
