On September 30th 2011, this aircraft crashed into the Pine Tree Inn in Falls of Rough, Grayson County, KY, located near Rough River State Park shortly after takeoff from Rough River State Park Airport (2I3) and caught fire after the pilot tried to return to the airport. The pilot died in the crash and a pet cat belonging to the motel's owner was killed. http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=138871. Visual examination of the engine revealed that it was an automotive engine and the propeller was still attached. The engine was retained for further examination. http://www.ntsb.gov/aviationquery/brief.aspx?ev_id=20110930X51940&key=1 |
