 DESCRIPTION FOR MIKE HEATON’S 1964 MODEL 185-C SKYWAGON N5813T SERIAL # 1850713.
UPDATED 10-15-04
Condition in fall of 2004: Exterior paint is 6 out of 10 owing principally to pealing paint on strut & wing leading edges and engine cowls caused primarily by flight in rain showers. Other Paint is much better.
Interior: 1990. Rated 5 out of 10 due to some fabric & carpeting coming unglued and rip in headliner. A small piece of headliner is hanging in the baggage compartment.

Note if you are in a state where the number of seats have a bearing on the annual Tax and/or the insurance, this airplane, though manufactured with 6 seats has been converted to 4 seats by removing the original seats 3, 4, 5 & 6 and replacing them with two Cessna 206 center seats as seats 3 & 4. The STC paperwork for that conversion (STC owned by Kenmore Air Harbor) is included with the Log Book package.

Cessna 185-C Serial # 185-0713
820 SMOH (Mattituck) / 4834 TTAF / aprox. 450 SPOH
LR Fuel, 74 Gal. usable main + 26 usable aux
Extended Baggage
Factory Float Kit B
There are some violations of the float kit (rendering the plane legally unfit for floats) that could easily be corrected. As of now the plane it is not legal for floats for the following reasons:
I am not an advocate of floats.
Propeller is under size for seaplane but OK for landplane. Reason: sound reduction & extra speed& glide afforded by the shorter propeller.
Most of the brittle stainless control cables required for seaplane have been replaced with the more durable galvanized ones good for the land plane only.
With that said the float kit is otherwise complete.
Ground Service Plug.
Never on Floats Since Paint in 1986. Imron Red on White 1978 Cessna factory pattern & color.

Radios
Nav Com:
King KX-155 W/GS
(+ A second navcom is contained in GNS-530)
DME
King KN-62
Wired for stand alone operation. This will be the next item to be removed to make panel space. Perhaps for a now very inexpensive KLN-88 backup Loran Navigator.
ADF
King KR-87 Radio Direction Finder
Also plumbed & wired to airspeed switch to activate at 40 Kts. to control flight timer feature to give actual off the ground time. Same setup is used to run Hobbs meter ie, Hobbs meter runs only when aircraft is exceeding 40 knots GS. If on this feature, entirely legal for either part 91 or 135, will save up to 20% on 100 hour maintenance as the regulations clearly state “Flight Time”. Tach runs as soon as the engine reaches 800 rpm and then continuously to shutdown thereafter (for block or logbook time).
GPS 1
Garman GNS 530
Richly integrated with autopilot, HSI, fuel flow & various air data sensors. Database is current.
GPS 2
Garmin GPS 155
Old system still installed, fully functional with internal emergency battery (removed) and electrically separate.
Garman 155 TSO W/North America Database. Certified for approaches in this airplane (if data base is current; it is not).
Intercom
Telex with partition capability. Wired for Bose Type 1 & 10 as well as standard headsets to all four places.
Thunder Storm Detection Equipment
Strike Finder; heading stabilized to DG
Auto Pilot
S-TEC 60-2
Coupled to Nav1, Heading bug or either GPS for coupled approaches from localizer intercept to the runway.
GPSS GPS Steering System
Garman
Hooked with A/B switch so as to allow either GPS (the 155 or the 530) to speak directly to the Autopilot.
HSI
S-TEC ST-180
Coupled to autopilot and 530 GPS. DG in HSI is slaved via flux gate in left wing tip.
Gyro Panel
Cessna Panel completely replaced including all gyro instruments.
Second Electric Gyro included to comply with 135 rules for SE-IFR.
Circuit Breakers
Changed to pullable Staco units.

Supplemental Type Certified Modifications:
Windshield
Mod to increase thickness & remove divider strip to one piece wo/divider strip. Side windows removed and replaced w/maximum thickness material at the same time.
Oil Filter
Air Wolf Filter adapter to accept Champion 98110 cartridge.
Engine Preheater
EZ-Heat oil pan Heater hard wired to Tanis Flush mount receptacle in belly.
Insight Graphic Engine Monitor
Simultaneously displays all 6 EGT’s & all 6 CHT’s
Strobe Lighting
Wheelen Wing tip & tail units. STC’d to allow removal of giant Grimes rotating beacon atop vertical stab. +5 knots. Grimes unit has been replaced with STC’d plastic fairing to make vertical stab appear as though the beacon was never there.
6 to 4 seat modification
This Kenmore Air Harbor STC removes the tiny 3, 4, 5 & 6 seats and replaces them with two Cessna 206 center seats on Cessna seat rails. This modification facilitates great comfort for the 3rd & 4th seats as well as quick change to cargo configuration.
Cargo Net
Original Equipment Cargo net-New
Fuel Caps
Monarch Development Anti leak / anti siphon Fuel Caps
Interior
Cessna Interior completely replaced with modern fire blocked materials. Circa 1990
Tail wheel
XP Modifications uses 5.00x5 tire. (This is the Most common tire size in general aviation; no need to carry a spare).
Door & Baggage locks
Medico high security locks on these two doors.
Yokes & Yoke Switches
Avion Research Yokes & Switches
Pilot side: Mic. / Autopilot disconnect / Ident./ florescent map light (in underside of yoke).
Co Pilot Side: Mic, Ident & Florescent map light (in underside of yoke)
Flight Timer
Air switch in pitot system in series with mags & oil pressure automatically causes Hobbs meter and KR-87 flight timer to run only when plane is exceeding 40 Knots fitting FAA definition of ‘Flight Time.’
Hobbs Meter
Standard type but wired to an airspeed switch (provided in the GNS 530) to activate at approximately 40Kts as provided in the FAR’s for measuring engine flight time.
Windshield Air Vents
Soros fully locking & leak free conversion.
Cleveland Wheels & Brakes
Shoulder Harness
BAS units for the Front seats
Horizon Inst. Electronic Tach –
Set for measuring piloting time (block time) ie, runs from when engine first exceeds 800 RPM and has oil pressure then continuously until shutdown.
Fuel system mods:
JPI Digi-flow fuel computer tied to GNS-530. Shows fuel onboard, fuel used, fuel & miles to go etc… Works with Mains or tips & mains.
Gami-Jectors allows operation on the lean side of peek EGT; saves 2-3 GPH. Typical cruse is 162 MPH TAS on 10.5 GPH @ 8000 Ft. 150 MPH cruse @ 8.5 gph.
Flint Aero Tip Tanks installed 2003; add 25.6 gals usable for a total of just over 100 gals. Basically this doubles the area the plane can reach without refueling. Together with the Gami-Jectors this gives this airplane a still air range of over to 1500 SM @ 150 mph. Normal cruse with light load is 167 mph TAS at 8,000.
Flint Tanks increase wing area from 175 to 185 square feet and increase cruse speed slightly above 10,000 ft.
Flint tank STC carries a 400# gross weight increase from 3200# to 3600#
Items purchased and included but not yet installed:
Gasser Banner tow hook

This Summer (2008) this airplane flew to The EAA convention at Oshkosh WI non stop tacking port Huron Michigan in 7 hours and 50 minutes landing with one our and 50 minutes of fuel. The flight was from MHT (Manchester, NH) to CLI (Clintonville, WI) a distance of 920 sm. The Fuel used was 75 gals purchased at CLI for what may have been the best 100LL price in the country at that time, 4.56/gal.
