I've had several requests from authors wishing to use photos that I have posted here on A-D for use in books and magazine articles.

The only thing that I care about is that my name is credited for the photo, and the image doesn't get propagated beyond the original requester.

I'm looking for suggestions on proper language when granting a release.

Hi Timothy,
First I would like to congratulate you on your success with the images!

Option 1.) I would pay an attorney for 1 hour consult and make sure you get what you want. They would have the proper language, or examples.

Option 2.) I am not an attorney/lawyer... That said, you may want to review what some of the major image sites are using.

There are several levels that let you retain your name, but allow for fair use.

"Attribution means:
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit."

Good Luck!

Timothy,

I have gotten a lot of requests from aircraft owners or past owners for permission to copy or have me send them a copy of an aircraft photo or photos of mine uploaded here in A-D. I just informally ask they credit me as photos are copyrighted. I don't make a big deal of it. Life's short and not to worry. Just last week a prior owner asked for my Iskra SPARK warbird photos-N226SB, as I recall.

But, if they are authors going to reproduce and publish your photo, you then should grant them a one-time use for specific purpose with copy back to you of what they publish. Asking a fee up front is not unreasonable in this case. I have had people ask me "How much do you want?"

With the Steve Fossett missing aircraft photos of mine that were the only ones on the web, the major news media sent me coordinated releases to sign which also covered their affiliates, and I granted publication rights in perpetuity. I am not interested in asking money for my photos, and thought speed was of the essence in that instance. Requested clippings from newspapers never did arrive, however. Question is: How much time, effort and expense do you want to pursue?
