I finished this Wittman Tailwind in 2003, it was started by a retired GM welder in 1971.
It is a 1953 design by Steve Wittman, the winningest racer of all time.
It now has over 220 hours on it and has competed in two Airventure Cup races from Dayton OH to Fond du Lac WI, winning its class each time. It holds the record for its class at 224.43 mph in the 2007 race.
We also use it to travel and to visit family, that is why Doug has photos of it at SZP.

Thank you, Red. Welcome to the Forum. I wondered about the race number on it. I knew of the late Steve Wittman and his designs, having grown up in Minnesota and flying and fishing in Wisconsin many times in the 1960s. A Tailwind once flew into ANE about 1965 in Minnesota where I learned to fly. Don't know whether it was Steve or not. Interesting history of your aircraft. You have made several trips to SZP with it. It is a beauty. It is always nice to hear from the aircraft's owner. BTW, I always thought the similar Nesmith Cougar was a ripoff of Steve's Tailwind design. Any thoughts on that?
