I was on the Great Lakes web sight and found a list of tail numbers. There was one number that looked very close to the number on an old photo of my dad back in the 30ties. He learned to fly in Kansas City MO in 1936. The number on the right wing is or was NC837K. In his log book it shows it to be a 2 PoLB with a Cirrus engine. The number on the web sight is looks like 837K. Could this be the same airplane??

If it is the same type, it mostly likely is the same plane. NC was the old prefix that was replaced with N, and there are lots of birds out there with NC still on the plane but N on the FAA registry. If they repainted the NC is changed.

From FAA:

The FAA no longer issues numbers beginning with NC, NX, NR, or NL. On some older aircraft, these numbers may be displayed in accordance with FAR Part 45.22.

NC: Commercial
NX: Experimental
NR: Restricted
NL: Limited

Check here for an extensive history of US N-Numbers:

Wow, that link to the history was very interesting. I never knew it was so involved!
