OK, aircraft experts. What bomber in squadron service was originally designed for four reciprocating engines but the production model wound up with only two?

Hint-Only 21 were produced, including the prototypes. Name the make, model and engine designations.

Warning-There is a bit of a weasel in my request, but legitimate.

Well...only 21 B-2's were built....but it's a 4 engine machine so... Laughing Wink Wink

Are you talking about the Keystone LB-7 with Pratt & Whitney R-1690's ?

The weasel may be that the LB-7 was one of many Keystones in the LB-6 series...LB-6 through LB-14...mostly the same with different engines and tails. And 3 of the LB-7's were actually LB-6's, modified.

Sorry Zane. Wrong on all speculations. This one is tough, I'll admit. Keep trying though.

Martin P4M Mercator - Pratt & Whitney 4360's (and a couple of Allison J33 gas burning jets, thus another weasel? )

2 prototypes ans 19 production versions....

WOW! Congratulations Zane! Was my M&M clue helpful?

The rare and hardly known US Navy Martin P4M-1 MERCATOR with two 3,250 Hp P&W R-4360-20A Wasp recips and two 24,610 lb st Allison J33-A-10A Turbojet engines operated in the Cold War era for maritime patrol work only with VP-21 starting in June 1950. They replaced the US Navy's PB4Y PRIVATEERs

These were originally designed for maritime patrol work but were converted to P4M-1Q radar reconnaissance intelligence aircraft, spying on Soviet and Chinese radars. VQ-1 then operated them in the Pacific and VQ-2 operated them in the Atlantic zones. They were retired from service in 1961 after one loss-one shot down and another fired at.

Specs: Max speed: 409 mph at 20,090 ft.
Range: 2,833 miles
Service ceiling: 25,145 ft
Max Weight TO: 88,194 lbs.
Weapons: 4 20mm cannons, 4 .50 cal machine guns,
up to 5,988 lbs bombs

Wingspan: 114 ft
Length: 86.6 ft
Height: 26 ft
Wing area: 1,310 sq ft

And yes, the weasel bit was the total engines number, recip (plus jet).

Yeah the M&M's thing was a huge hint...I had actually looked at some earlier Martin stuff before but didn't go far enough. Plus when you said Squadron...somehow my brain said Air Force....so..

Good one! I learned something today!

Hi All

There is a plastic construction model kit of the Mercator for those interested -

Cheers,

Peter.
