The engine they used needs modification to be fitted to that plane as the normal position for Ranger is with "hanging" pistons or doesn't matter?

It does matter for a true replication. Apparently not fully replicated as you write, because the Fairchild Ranger 6 cylinder in-line engines are inverted engines, with crankshaft above the pistons, not consistent with the aircraft engine installation as photographed. Good catch!
