4389 @ KFFO - This Storch was used by the Flygvapnet, and then became a civilian aircraft.  It is wearing the markings of Aufklärungsgruppe 2.(H)/14 which was a reconnaissance unit supporting Panzerarmee Afrika, but does not wear the white fuselage theatre band.

42-83665 @ KFFO - The Apache was the dive bomber version of the Mustang.  It was used by the USAAF in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and India.  This Apache is painted to represent the aircraft flown by Capt. Lawrence Dye of the 522nd FBS, 27th FG in World War II.

67-14709 @ KFFO - Converted from the Sikorsky CH-3, the Jolly Green Giant was intended for combat search and rescue over Southeast Asia.  It had a retractable fuel probe and external tanks giving it high endurance, as well as armor protection and defensive armament.

5909 @ KIAD - This Kingfisher was a veteran of the Pacific War, having served aboard USS Indiana (BB-58) and from New Caledonia. Lt. j.g. Rollin M. Batten, Jr. flying this Kingfisher was awarded a Navy Cross for rescuing two airmen shot down near Guam on July 4, 1944.

NR1050 @ KIAD - On display in the Boeing Aviation Hangar room at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This Gulfhawk flown by Maj. Alfred Williams was fully aerobatic and capable of inverted flight for up to half an hour. Maj. Williams flew this aircraft at many airshows.

N41867 @ KIAD - Lawrence Bell saw a market for the helicopter as a personal means for Americans to move around after the war. Along with Arthur Young and Bartram Kelly, Bell produced the Model 30 Genevieve, which flew in 1942.

83479 @ KIAD - Helldivers were the last dive-bombers in the U.S. Navy. This Helldiver never saw combat, having reached Guam before the war ended. It was assigned to VB-92 Battling Beasts aboard USS Lexington (CV-16) from Sept. to Dec. 1945.

41834 @ KIAD - Hellcat Bu.No. 41834 was built at Bethpage in Feb. 1944. Assigned to VF-15 aboard USS Hornet (CV-12), it made its way to Hawaii. It was then assigned to VF-3 and VF-83.  It was converted into a drone and used for radioactivity tests at Bikini Atoll, 1946.

7161 - This Albatros is a late war build that served with Jasta 46 that was formed at Graudenz. It was damaged in combat and was not repaired, eventually finding its way to the USA and was acquired by the Smithsonian.

N211 - The original 'Spirit of St. Louis' under protective sheets in the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall at the National Air and Space Museum. Charles Lindbergh took 33 hours 30 min. to cross the Atlantic solo from New York to Paris non-stop in May 1927.

15392 - This Wildcat was built at Linden, New Jersey in 1943 and operated for only thirteen months with the Navy, mainly at Naval Air Station Norman, Oklahoma. It was placed in storage until its restoration by Grumman in 1975 for the NASM.
