Billy F. Baumann, 2011-12-14 13:11:46
I am first cousin to Jack Baumann, designer of the Brigadier and President of Baumann Aircraft Company. I have been in on the design of the Brigadier from its first conception which was in Joliet, Illinois in 1941. I became an Army Air Corps pilot in WW II and served 13 months overseas. Jack moved to Lockheed in Burbank, California in January 1942 and worked there all during the war. I was discharged from service in February 1946. Design of the Brigadier had taken a back seat during the war, but the design effort came alive again in 1946. I helped with the design and building of the Brigadier B-250, flew it on it's first flight on June 27, 1947 and did all the flight test work. This first Brigadier was thrown together with "quick and dirty" materials at a cost of $15,000, but was of the identical external configuration intended for the production design. The mission of this first airplane was to prove the concept and for demonstration to help raise the finances for a production program. It was sold to Piper Aircraft Company in 1949 for $25,000. (Long story I wont go into now). This money was used to build the second Brigadier named B-290. The first Brigadier had 125 horsepower engines, thus B-250 with B standing for Baumann. The second Brigadier had the same engines which had been upgraded to 145 horsepower, thus B-290. I helped in the final detail design, helped build the B-290, flew it on its maiden flight and did all the flight test work for FAA certification. I have over 1000 hours flying time total on the two Brigadiers. It is a long sad story why this airplane never went into production which I can tell you about if you are interested. I delivered this second airplane to the Experimental Aircraft Association in Hales Corner Wisconsin in 1970, now the Oshkosh Air Museum. It was exhibited inside for a while then stripped of its engines and other items that could be sold. This was a mistake on my part for not having a written contract with them. I thought it would be a fitting final resting place for the Brigadier. What was left of it was moved outside and covered with a canvas. Don't know if that hulk is still there. The Brigadier was an excellent airplane with exceptional flying qualities and other outstanding benefits due to it's pusher configuration. The only penalty in it's design was the weight of the extension shaft through the wing. The engines were installed in the wing leading edge. An extension shaft about 4 feet long went through the wing with the propellor located 6 inches behind the wing trailing edge. The slight weight penalty is more than offset by the benefits from it's pusher configuration. I would like to tell you more about the benefits and the story of the Brigadier in a separate email. If you are interested please contact me by email, telephone or snail mail. I live in a Del Webb Sun City Shadow Hills community in Indio, California, 40-136 Corte Los Orlanos, 92203, 760-772-8057.

N90616 was formerly assigned to one of only two Baumann Brigadier B-290 aircraft built. The B-290 evolved from the Baumann B-250 with two Continental C125 pusher engines which first flew in June, 1947. The prototype of the B-250 was sold to Piper Aircraft for use as a test vehicle.

The B-290 N90616 had two 145 Hp Continental C145 six-cylinder air cooled pusher engines on a conventional shoulder-mounted wing. The distinctive feature was the twin pusher engine arrangement. The other B-290 constructed had two Franklin 335 165 Hp engines, also pushers on conventional shoulder mounted wing. The Brigadiers were an all metal five place cabin twin engine monoplanes.

Performance of B-290 with two C145 engines: Max. speed, 175 mph; cruise speed 155 mph; initial climb rate, 1,250 ft./min., ceiling, 18,000 ft., range, 750 miles.
Weights: empty, 2,200 lbs., loaded, 3,500 lb.
Dimensions: Span, 41'0", length, 27'5", height, 10'2", wing area, 207 sq. ft.
