| During 1983 & 1984 I did most of my training for my PPL in G-AIGR from Cranfield, with the Kestrel Flying Club. Most of the tuition was with the club CFI, Tim Merrett, who had been an Army Air Corp Auster pilot. Most of the time there was no provision for headsets, so instructions were shouted into my right ear by Tim, above the din of the Gipsy Major. It wasn't a very well looked after aircraft, but it was sad to hear that it had been destroyed in a gale at Cranfield. The remains were aquired by Cliff Baker, who stripped it of all usable parts at Carr Farm, where he had most of the remaining Auster spares stored. |
