I bought this A/C from the USAF Alconbury Aero Club in 1965 for $200. I worked at CSE Aviation Oxford at the time. One of the Alconbury A/C came in for fuel and I spoke to the pilot who told me about it. I ask and got the time off and drove straight to Alconbury to see the A/C. I fell in love with it on the spot. I spoke to the Club Secretary and purchased the A/C I call back to CSE and spoke to them and ask them to send an Engineer with trailer.
They arrived and we removed the wings loaded on the trailer got back late evening
next morning we unloaded it and put it in the hanger, I had the A/C insured fo ground risk only. two weeks later some one broke in and cut the N Numbers out, I put in a claim and was paid L750. I formed a group Called Kidlington Flying Group consisting of Engineers, pilots and a few family members and charged 50p weekly subs the A/c was broken down by sections engine, instruments, When customs arrived to survey the A/C for Import duty
I show him and explained everthing to him and we agreed on a fee of L 15 .
The A/C was rebuilt from the ground up several members learn to fly on it and several other pilots got tail wheel experence. I flew the the A/C 474.35 hours it took me to Jersey, Gurnsey, France, Ilse of Man and white. Iused to take 2 persons to Jersey and brig back potatoes, tomatoes
but the beauty of these trips was claiming the duty back which in some cases more than paid for the trip. I had the A/c registered in my late wife name Lily Hatfield
I have several photos of WPW if you want them let me a send a email address, Tally Ho John Hatfield. Orange Park, Florida tel: 904-272-5451
