Aviation officials are investigating the crash and say it was a single-engine plane. It happened around 1:30 Saturday afternoon, and witnesses say it looked as if the wings snapped just moments before it hit the ground.

The Kern County Coroner's Office has identified the victims as 31-year-old Douglas Wright and 18-year-old Athena Moreno, both of Bodfish. Witnesses say Wright was flying the experimental aircraft near the Lake Isabella Auxiliary Dam, when they heard a loud bang.

Investigators say the experimental aircraft crashed near a mobile home park just east of the lake. "I heard the engine, he was going up, and it just stopped, and the wings buckled, and he went into a spin, and the body came out," says witness Daniel Derr. "I was working on the car and I glanced up and saw, he did a flip and came out, I stood up and I thought I was dreaming, as he was falling I thought it was a dream, but it was real," added Derr.

The coroner says 31-year-old Donald Wright of Bodfish was operating the aircraft. His passenger, identified as 18-year-old Bodfish resident Athena Moreno, also died. Officials believe the aircraft was at an altitude of at least 1,000 feet, prior to the crash.

When witness Robert Aycox saw it happen, he knew it was bad. "It went up like this, there was a snap, the person on that side, which turned out to be the guy fell out, I told my seven-year-old daughter to look away, they're dead."

On Moreno's MySpace page, messages of condolences from those who knew the young girl. One reads, "you will be missed greatly Athena, rest in peace."

Preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration indicates the plane was an experimental aircraft called the Airborne Streak 2. According to the FAA the aircraft was registered to Terry Visser of Lynden, Wa. A spokesmen said Visser sold the plane to Donald Wright, but had not completed the paperwork.

Witnesses say Wright and others were camping near Lake Isabella, and had been flying the aircraft for two days in the area.
The National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation administration are investigating the crash.
