| This was my father's plane when I was a child. Actually before I was born. It belonged to Herman Eckert of Huntington Indiana. He had 84 inches taken out of the total wingspan to make it a "clipped wing cub" as he called it. He was a machinist by trade, and an engineering genius. Piper said it would greatly affect the airworthyness of the aircraft to cut this much from the span but not only did he proceed with it, it flew beautifully from his accounts. I have photos of the aircraft in flight in its green covering, as it was called the "Green Beetle" by everyone who saw it. I would love to see this plane now. I am a pilot and would love to restore a cub to resemble that plane to honor his memory. He flew P-51D models in WW2 and also owned a PT-17 Stearman biplane.
