| This aircraft was built as C-47A 42-24338 and delivered to the USAAF on 97/43. It was then allocated to the RCAF as Dakota Mk.III “661” on 9/16/43. The plane remained with the RCAF until sold as surplus in April 1969 to Scottish Aviation at Prestwick on behalf of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at West Freugh, Stranraer. The plane was refurbished and repainted with RAF roundels, still retaining “661,” and delivered to RAE on a QED Ministry of Technology contract to drop sample sonobuoys into the sea off the coast of Portpatrick in Wigtownshire. Since as “661” the plane did not comply with standard RAF serials, it was given KG661, but this code had been given to another Dakota which had crashed in 1944. The error was reported in 1979 with the allocation of ZA947. The plane was later fitted with seats from a De Havilland Comet airliner and can carry up to 28 passengers. | |

| My brother Colin Kinder was chief pilot of XA947 and TS423 at WestFreugh for a number of years in the 1960s. I still have his flying log book. Regards D.Kinder | |
