What was the very first pure-jet (no pistons) aircraft to operate off of an aircraft carrier vessel? (Do not submit any piston/jet combination aircraft as they are not suitable answers as this quiz is specifically formulated).

!. Aircraft maker and name?

2. Exact date of first flight operation answering this quiz correctly?

3. What aircraft carrier vessel was used? Provide name of vessel.

4. What major World Event happened just one day after this quiz flight event?

I believe this is correct but one never knows 100 per cent.

1. Goblin powered De Havilland DH100 Sea Vampire. Serial No: LZ551, Pilot Eric "Winkle" Brown.

2. 3rd December 1945

3. HMS Ocean

4. The American senate approved the participation of the USA in the United Nations.

Cheers
Rob

Congratulations are due you. My source differs on only Question 4, in that the De Havilland Vampire made its very first flight just one day-December 3,1945,-before Germany surrendered World War 2. The flight was from aircraft carrier H.M.S. Ocean. The Vampire also was the very first pure-jet aircraft to operate from an aircraft carrier.

Thanks Doug.

Just one query.

My sources state that Germany surrendered unconditionally on the 7th May 1945 in Reims, France with the definitive text being signed on the 8th May.

Cheers
Rob

OOPS! My bad. A reread of my data shows that two print sentences were misread by me and you are correct.

The Vampire did make it's first flight the day before Germany surrendered. I screwed up my text answer here.

Old age is catching up with me well into my ninth decade. Rolling Eyes
