I found a photo of an aircraft showing registration NX312TJ. When I looked on this website, I found the aircraft, one photo with this registration and 3 older photos showing it without the X. Checking the web I found that before 1948 NXnnn registrations indicated Experimental, but since then, only Nnnnn was used.

As an Aussie, can you please advise how an aircraft photographed in 2016 can have an NXnnn registration.

Regards,

Peter.

US aircraft can have the NX ( or NL for limited category NR for restricted) in their registration number if they are Exhibition or Antique or 'other special rules". Also If they put the X in the registration number they don't have to placard the "Experimental" (or limited, etc ) on the aircraft.

But they still have to have a placard stating "passenger warning, this aircraft does not comply with federal safety regulations for standard aircraft" or some such thing.
